Steve Getty is currently a curriculum developer with the high school curriculum BSCS Science: An Inquiry Approach. He is also a writer for the current revision (3rd) of BSCS Middle School Science and Technology. Prior to joining BSCS, Steve had a 3-year teaching position as Visiting Professor of Geology at the Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. During this time, he directed senior research projects and taught in the 6-week Integrated Natural Sciences Summer Institute for M.A.T. candidates.

Steve has a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences from Brown University and has held research positions at Harvard University, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of New Mexico. His areas of interest in research include the evolution of mountain belts (Appalachians, Alps, North American Cordillera), new methods for radiometric age dating (U-Th-Pb geochronology), and the application of isotopic tracers to Earth Systems.

Steve’s work in science education stems from August 1998 with the Hotspots Teacher Learning Project in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was also a member of the New Mexico State Standards writing committee and founder and president of the Coalition for Excellence in Science Education (CESE) in New Mexico. He is currently a Lead Instructor with the SEDL Teachers-as-Leaders Program studying paleontology in the Rio Grande Rift, New Mexico, and with the NSF-sponsored STEP-uP Program. The STEP-uP Program consists of innovative field courses for primary level teachers to learn about inquiry, geology, and mountain-building processes.
