Staff and Board: Updates and Activities


Rodger W. BybeeBSCS former Executive Director Rodger W. Bybee was honored 29 March 2008 at the NSTA Annual Conference in Boston as the recipient of the 2008 Brandwein Medal. BSCS former Executive Director Emeritus Rodger W. Bybee took part in the 13-14 February SciMath Briefing for Minnesota Policymakers, “A Decade of Action: Setting Priorities for STEM Education in Minnesota.” Dr. Bybee spoke at a 2 ˝-hour opening session on Wednesday, Feb. 13, later met with members or chairs of the Minnesota Senate Business, Industry and Jobs Committee, then presented the afternoon keynote address for the Policymaker Briefing at the state capitol. Attending the afternoon session were state legislators and other policymakers from education and business. On Thursday, 14 Feb., Bybee took part in a public meeting at the state capitol to discuss House E-12 Education Policy.

BSCS Director Emeritus Rodger W. Bybee is featured in the Summer 2007 issue of the American Physical Society’s publication, Forum on Education with an article titled, “The Influence of National Standards on Science Education.” For more information, click here.


Dr. Bybee is featured in the November 2007 issue of The Science Teacher with an article titled, "Science Teaching and International Assessments."


Dr. Bybee also has an editorial in the October issue of The American Biology Teacher (NABT), “Do We Need Another Sputnik?” The article is part of a series of BSCS 50th anniversary-related articles.


In addition, Bybee will be featured in the November issue of The Science Teacher (NSTA) with a piece titled “Science Teaching and International Assessments: An Introduction to PISA and TIMSS.”


BSCS science educator Steve Getty contributed to an article that has been published in Science of the Total Environment [372 (2007) 463-473]. The article is titled "Human lead exposure in a late-19th century mental asylum population." Authors are Nathan W. Bower, Sarah A. McCants, Joseph M. Custodio, Michael E. Ketters, Stephen R. Getty, and J. Michael Hoffman.


Joe Taylor, BSCS Director of the Center for Research and Evaluation, Pam Van Scotter, BSCS Director of the Center for Curriculum Development, and Doug Coulson (PS International) have authored an article, "Bridging Research on Learning and Student Achievement: The Role of Instructional Materials," published in the fall 2007 issue of The Science Educator, 16 (2), 44-50.
