Director of the BSCS Center for Professional Development

BSCS (Biological Sciences Curriculum Study) is currently seeking a director for its Center for Professional Development. BSCS is a not-for-profit, tax exempt, 501(c)(3), educational research and development institution. Since its inception in 1958, the BSCS has been among the world’s leaders in the development and professional support of exemplary science instructional materials (K-college). Both our materials and our services emphasize coherence, rigor, and focus. BSCS, now in its 50th year, is the oldest continuously active research and development group focused on innovative science curriculum. BSCS is organized into three centers to highlight different areas of science education reform: Curriculum Development, Professional Development, and Research and Evaluation. This is a competitive, nationwide search.

BSCS is interested in candidates for the Director of the BSCS Center for Professional Development who have the strongest combination of the following strengths, qualifications, and abilities:
  • An understanding of BSCS and its mission
  • A comprehensive understanding of the domain of professional development, especially as it relates to science education
  • Significant experience in planning and delivering professional development in the field
  • A commitment to the central role of high-quality instructional materials in successful science teaching and learning
  • Exceptional leadership and management skills
  • Success in proposal development and publishing scholarly articles
  • Experience in managing staff, budgets, time lines, workload, and contracts
  • a willingness to contribute to project work as well as manage the center
  • A strong commitment to improving science education for all students and teachers
  • An advanced degree in science education, doctorate preferred
  • K-12 teaching experience
  • Strong writing and creative thinking abilities
  • Extensive experience providing transformative professional development for science educators in diverse settings
  • Strong ability to conceptualize projects
  • Experience working in collaborative teams
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines under pressure
  • Willingness to travel as necessary to support professional development and to promote BSCS at national, regional, and state meetings and conferences
The center director will be responsible for expanding and communicating a vision for professional development and reform in science education within the organization and across the broader science education community. The individual must be able to apply his or her experience to a collaborative, productive team environment within a nonprofit business. The center director must also have the knowledge and ability to be a spokesperson for BSCS in many venues, including arenas for fundraising and development. The center director serves as a member of the BSCS Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and reports directly to the executive director. Currently, the BSCS Center for Professional Development has nine staff members out of a total staff of forty-six.

The start date is negotiable, but no later than 2 January 2009. A successful candidate must be willing to relocate to Colorado.
