Curriculum Development > College > Other Supplemental Programs > Bioinformatics and the Human Genome Project   Bioinformatics and the Human Genome Project This stand-alone instructional module addresses how and why computers are essential for analyzing the data produced by the Human Genome Project. The module provides teachers with background information about development and applications of bioinformatics. Five inquiry-based classroom lessons create a scenario where students play the roles of employees of a fictitious biotechnology company. Using a website developed specifically for this module, students analyze sequence data to look for genes, perform a BLAST search to obtain clues to gene function, and assess the extent of genetic variation among their samples. Although genetic databases are important to medical research, they raise ethical issues as well. The module presents students with a dilemma relating to issues of informed consent and the privacy of genetic information.
