The Puzzle of Inheritance: Genetics and the Methods of Science
1997
The public is inundated by a steady stream of new discoveries in human and medical genetics, including insights into phenomena such as genomic imprinting and genetic anticipation. They are however, only two mechanisms that often are grouped under the category of nontraditional inheritance. Other such mechanisms include mitochondrial inheritance and uniparental disomy. The media's interpretation of this information has focused largely on implications for personal, family or pubic health, and on the ethical and social implications of new or potential discoveries. All but missing from these interpretations is a consideration of the ways in which those genetic mechanisms reinforce or challenge current biological thinkinng and how they illustrate the nature of science. BSCS addresses these issues in this curriculum supplement that provides teachers with an update on important information about nontraditional inheritance and the nature of science and includes five related classroom activities.
