BSCS partners with Singapore Ministry of Education
Development of 19 lesson packages underway

The Ministry of Education of Singapore is developing a new national curriculum for elementary students based on the BSCS 5E Instructional Model. Three curriculum officers and three master teachers traveled from Singapore to Colorado Springs in June to begin work with Nancy Landes, Professional Development Center Director, and BSCS Science Educators Deb Jordan and Brooke Bourdelat-Parks.

This group worked collaboratively to develop an Ecosystems lesson package that melded Singapore culture, national standards, and the BSCS 5E Instructional Model. Upon their return to Singapore, the educators shared the development process and knowledge of the BSCS 5Es with 30 teachers from six primary schools. These teachers began developing lesson packages on six additional topics.

In September, Deb Jordan and Brooke Bourdelat-Parks traveled to Singapore where they worked with all 36 educators to further develop their understanding of the BSCS 5Es. While there, they provided clinic sessions for each of the six teams at their home schools. They were also excited to observe a lesson in a Singapore classroom. In addition, Deb and Brooke formed new friendships, had many adventures in dining, and saw a number of national sights.

Each of the six team leaders will visit Colorado in November to continue the work. By November 2009, the Ministry of Education hopes to have developed a total of 19 lesson packages.
