Chancellor’s Leadership Chair in Biochemistry and Biophysics for Science and Education, University of California, San Francisco

Bruce Alberts, Ph.D., holds the Chancellor’s Leadership Chair in Biochemistry and Biophysics for Science and Education at the University of California, San Francisco, to which he returned after serving two six-year terms as the president of the National Academy of Sciences.

He is noted as one of the original authors of The Molecular Biology of the Cell, a preeminent textbook in the field now in its fifth edition, and has earned many honors and awards, including 16 honorary degrees.

He serves on the advisory boards of more than 25 nonprofit institutions, including the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Strategic Education Research Partnership. He also served as the editor-in-chief of Science from 2008-13 and as a United States Science Envoy from 2009-11.

Dr. Alberts joined the BSCS Board of Directors in 2014 and served two terms. He is BSCS’s first Emeritus Board Member.
