For more than six decades, BSCS Science Learning has produced original scientific artwork that helped millions of students discover biology, evolution, ecology, genetics, and the natural world. Today, this remarkable collection represents an important intersection of science, education, and art—and we’re looking toward its next chapter.

About BSCS Science Learning

BSCS Science Learning develops research-based science education programs and services. We have a 66-year track record of leveraging research to create practical solutions. Today as an independent nonprofit organization based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, we offer classroom-tested instructional materials and immersive professional learning and leadership development experiences that meet the needs of the diverse populations and educational contexts of 21st century America. Our staff includes experienced educators, educational researchers, and scientists who share a commitment to transforming science education.

Our Artwork Collection

In 1963, a new chapter in science education began with the release of three groundbreaking high school biology textbooks: An Ecological Approach (the Green Version), A Molecular Approach (the Blue Version), and An Inquiry Into Life (the Yellow Version). These weren’t just textbooks; they were visual journeys into the living world. This moment marked the beginning of BSCS’s visionary collaboration with visual artists to bring biology to life through vivid imagery, striking graphics, and intricate natural illustrations. At one point, BSCS employed 20+ artists. What followed was a wave of innovative educational programs, accompanied by an ever-growing collection of original artwork. From the tiniest microorganisms to majestic creatures of both the past and present, these illustrations form a stunning chronicle of life on Earth, captured through the combined lens of science and art. Not only do we have thousands of pieces of original art, we can identify how the art was used in our textbooks.

These works are more than textbook illustrations—they are cultural artifacts documenting the evolution of science education in America.

The Opportunity

As we move towards our 70th anniversary, BSCS is exploring partnerships that will help to preserve, share, and expand public access to this extraordinary collection. We are investigating innovative ideas including:

• Launching a public exhibition of selected artwork and associated historical documentation This could result in a traveling exhibition.
• Establishing a permanent home with a mission-aligned partner.
• Imaging and completing digitization and cataloging including the development of…
