Transforming science education through research-driven innovation

At BSCS Science Learning, we believe that access to high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) and professional learning (PL) are important for supporting students’ science learning.

In partnership with Southern University, BSCS has been awarded a $4M research grant from the US Department of Education to conduct a research study to understand how teachers’ use of HQIM, like OpenSciEd, can lead to better student learning outcomes. To do so, we need your help.

Who can participate?

We are looking for 8th grade science teachers who are either:

  • currently using OpenSciEd AND are committed to using it through the end of the 2026-27 school year OR
  • committed to using other curriculum (including teacher-designed curricula) AND will not be teaching OpenSciEd through the end of the 2026-27 school year.

What are you committing to?

  • Administer student surveys, assessments, and teacher surveys during the 2025-26 and 2026-27 school years.
  • Since PL is important for HQIM implementation, OpenSciEd teachers will participate in
    • In-person professional learning: March 24-27 AND July 14-17, 2006
    • Virtual monthly PL community meet-ups (PLCs) during the 2026-27 school year
  • After the study, comparison teachers will have the opportunity to participate in professional learning

Why participate?

  • Contribute to our field’s understanding for how to support meaningful science learning for all students.
  • OpenSciEd teachers joining in the 2025-2026 school year will receive 1.) $3,000 for participating in the study, 2.) summer and academic year professional learning support, and 3.) two kits for implementing OpenSciEd units.
  • Non-OpenSciEd teachers will receive 1.) $2,000 for participating in the study, and 2.) the opportunity to participate in OpenSciEd PL after the study’s conclusion.
