Science Teachers Learning from Lesson Analysis

STeLLA Online

For years, districts and schools across the country have been asking us the same question: “When can you bring STeLLA to our science teachers?”

Now, for the first time, BSCS is offering a fully-online version of our proven STeLLA professional learning program and upper-elementary science teachers can participate in STeLLA from anywhere in the country.

Power of the Program

STeLLA Online is not your typical online professional learning course. It’s research-based. It’s immersive. It’s interactive. And it’s led by expert facilitators who will guide participants to become highly effective science teachers – over the course of one, life-changing school year.

Research shows STeLLA Online is highly effective in improving science teaching and student achievement in science. Teachers are calling it a game changer.

Eula Kador, elementary school teacher in Baton Rouge, Louisiana

STeLLA has been a game changer. I have realized that I was a teacher who mainly focused on the correct response instead of understanding how students thought about ideas and how they connected the ideas to the main learning goal. I have a new perspective and I know that I can create a classroom environment of life-long scientists. I can now present science material in a conceptual way, instead of teaching for the state assessment test.

STeLLA Online provides the same value as the traditional in-person version, plus a few bonus benefits.

The Certified Pathway (see description below) underwent rigorous impact studies and it was shown to have significant student science learning outcomes and teacher practice and science learning outcomes. The additional pathways create ways for more educators to access the power of STeLLA professional learning.

Teachers will:Students will:
participate in a program that significantly improves science teaching and learning achievement.become more engaged in science and have improved science learning outcomes.
become more effective and confident in the classroom.have opportunities to share their voices and ideas in the classroom.
feel a sense of community through this work.work in their classroom community to figure out the science they’re learning.
receive a certificate of participation that can be applied toward recertification credits.become proficient in the following learning goals
Earth’s Changing Surface Learning Goals
Water Cycle Learning Goals (included in Certified Pathway)
Bonus Benefits of Online Participation:
Accessible for teachers in any location across the country
Convenient timeframes for teachers with summer obligations and family commitments
With group costs, this program is a cost-effective alternative to in-person PL (minimum study group of 6)
Builds community among teachers within study groups, potentially from different locales

How It Works

STeLLA Online supports teachers in learning to use effective teaching strategies through a video-based lesson analysis approach.

STeLLA--What teachers learn: Effective Teaching Strategies. How teachers learn: Video-based Lesson Analysis.
STeLLA Online supports teachers in learning to use effective teaching strategies through a video-based lesson analysis approach.

Upper-elementary science teachers can choose between three STeLLA Online pathways. Each pathway equips teachers with a deep understanding of STeLLA’s highly effective teaching strategies and gives teachers an opportunity to practice analyzing videos to identify their impact on student engagement and learning. All teachers will also have an opportunity to conduct work synchronously and asynchronously within their professional learning communities (PLCs).

Introductory Pathway

$2,330 per teacher

Purpose: Learn the key principles of STeLLA and how to effectively implement the STeLLA teaching strategies.

Breakdown: Explore 7 Earth’s Changing Surface models and learn teaching strategies/analyze videos within PLCs.

Time Commitment: Summer only (approximately 8 weeks = 44 hours)

Proficiency Pathway

$3,142 per teacher

Purpose: Learn the key principles of STeLLA and how to effectively implement the STeLLA teaching strategies. Put theory into practice.

Breakdown: Intro pathway + teach 7 Earth’s Changing Surface lessons and analyze videos of participants within PLCs.

Time Commitment: Summer + Fall (approximately 8 weeks in the summer + teaching and 3 fall evening study group sessions = 52 hours)

Certified Pathway — RECOMMENDED

$3,820 per teacher

(Impact studies based on this pathway)

Purpose: Learn the key principles of STeLLA and how to effectively implement the STeLLA teaching strategies. Put theory into practice over an extended period of implementation, reflection, and improvement.

Breakdown: Proficiency pathway+ reflect on effectiveness + teach 6 Water Cycle Lessons and analyze videos of participants within PLCs.

Time Commitment: Summer (10 week summer course) + Fall (teach ECS lessons, film one lesson, and attend 6 evening study group meetings) + Spring (attend 5 evening study group sessions and complete asynchronous work in between) (approximately 20 weeks = 90 hours)
